The boundaries of the district form the Krishna , one of the largest rivers in South India, in the north , and its main tributary Tungabhadra in the south . The alluvial land between the two rivers is called the Doab of Raichur.

The Raichur district is divided into the five taluks Lingsugur, Devadurga, Raichur, Manvi and Sindhnur.

history

During the British colonial era, the Raichur district was one of the districts of Hyderabad , a nominally independent princely state under British sovereignty. In 1853 the Raichur district was ceded to the British, but returned to Hyderabad in 1860. After Indian independence in 1947, Hyderabad was incorporated into India. In 1956, the States Reorganization Act restructured the Indian states according to language boundaries. The Raichur district came together with the southwest of Hyderabad to the Kannada-speaking state of Mysore (renamed Karnataka in 1973 ). The eastern Taluk Alampur was separated because of its predominantly Telugu- speaking population and added to the Mahbubnagar district of the state of Andhra Pradesh . In 1998, the Raichur District continued to shrink when the Koppal District was formed from its western parts .

population

According to the 2011 Indian census, the Raichur district has 1,924,773 inhabitants. Between 2001 and 2011, the population grew by 15.3 percent, which is roughly the same as the average in Karnataka (15.7 percent). The population density of 228 inhabitants per square kilometer is below the state average (319 inhabitants per square kilometer). 25.3 percent of the district's population live in cities. The literacy rate is well below average: only 60.5 percent of the residents of the Raichur district can read and write, while the average in Karnataka is 76.1 percent.

According to the 2001 census, Hindus make up the majority of the inhabitants of the Raichur district with 84.9 percent. There is also a Muslim minority of 13.7 percent. In addition to Kannada , the main language of Karnataka, Urdu , which is spoken by Muslims like in most parts of Karnataka, and Telugu , the language of the neighboring state of Andhra Pradesh, are also common in the Raichur district . In the Taluk Raichur of the Raichur district, Urdu has the status of an associated official language due to the high proportion of its speakers in the population.
