Raichur ( Kannada : ರಾಯಚೂರು Rāyacūru ) is a city in the Indian state of Karnataka with around 230,000 inhabitants. It is the administrative seat of the Raichur district . The city has the status of a City Municipal Council .
location
Raichur is located around 450 km (driving distance) north of Bengaluru (formerly Bangalore ) in the northeast of Karnataka near the border with the neighboring state of Andhra Pradesh to the east . The city is located at an altitude of around 400 m in the central part of the Dekkan highlands in the so-called Raichur- Doab , the area between the two rivers Krishna and Tungabhadra . The climate in Raichur is mostly hot and dry; Rain (approx. 715 mm / year) falls almost only in the monsoon months from June to October.

The Kannada and Hindi- speaking population consists of about 67.5% Hindus , almost 30% Muslims and about. 1% each of Jains and Christians ; numerically small minorities are Sikhs , Buddhists and others. The male and female proportion of the population are approximately the same.

Agriculture dominates the villages in the area, especially rice cultivation and cotton production. The economic life in the city itself is determined by handicrafts, trade, small industries and services of all kinds.
history
Fort Raichur plays a central role in the history of the city. Built in 1294 by Gore Gangaya Ruddivaru, a minister to the King of Warangal , it was contested between the Vijayanagar Empire and the Bahmani Sultanate from the 14th century . At the end of the 15th century, Raichur came to the Sultanate of Bijapur . After the defeat Bijapurs against the army of Emperor Aurangzeb in 1686 and Raichur was in the Mughal Empire incorporated and came in 1724 to that of the Mughal governor ( Subahdar ) I. Asaf Jah established State of Hyderabad . During the British colonial era , Hyderabad was a nominally independent princely state under British rule. In 1853 Hyderabad Raichur ceded to the British, but in 1860 the city was returned to Hyderabad. One year after Indian independence, Hyderabad was annexed by India in 1948. Through the States Reorganization Act in 1956, Raichur came to the state of Mysore created after the language borders of the Kannada (renamed Karnataka in 1973 ).
Attractions
The old town of Raichur extends north of Fort Raichur. South of the fortress is an artificial lake called Aam Talab . Sights of the city are the Raichur Fort with the Mecca Mosque built in 1470 and the Friday Mosque from 1618 in the city center.
