The district of Mandya ( Kannada : ಮಂಡ್ಯ ಜಿಲ್ಲೆ ) is a district of the Indian state of Karnataka . The administrative center is the eponymous city of Mandya .

geography

The Shivanasamudra Falls of the Kaveri River

The Mandya district is located in the south of Karnataka in the southernmost part of the Dekkan Plateau. Neighboring districts are Mysore in the southwest, Hassan in the northwest, Tumkur in the north, Ramanagara in the east and Chamarajanagar in the south.

The area of the Mandya District is 4,955 square kilometers. The district area forms a plateau with an average height of 700 to 900 meters above sea level. This means that the temperatures are moderate. With an annual rainfall of around 700 millimeters, the climate is dry, but the water masses of the Kaveri River, which flows through the south of the district, make it possible to artificially irrigate half of the district area. Therefore, productive agriculture can be practiced in the Mandya district. The main crops are rice and sugar cane. On the border with the Mysore district, the Kaveri is dammed to the Krishnarajasagara reservoir. The Shivanasamudra Falls are located in the Kaveri River on the border with the Chamarajanagar District .

The Mandya district is divided into the seven taluks Mandya, Malavalli, Maddur, Pandavapura, Krishnarajpet, Shrirangapattana and Nagamangala.

history

During the British colonial era , what is now the Mandya district belonged to the princely state of Mysore . Originally, Mandya was part of the Mysore district , before the Mandya district was split off as an independent district in 1939. After Indian independence, Mysore joined the Indian Union in 1949. As a result of the reorganization of the Indian federal states, the district of Mandya became part of the state of Mysore (renamed Karnataka in 1973 ), which was formed according to the language borders of the Kannada .

population

According to the 2011 Indian census, the Mandya district has 1,808,680 inhabitants. Population growth is low: between 2001 and 2011, the population only grew by 2.6 percent, which is significantly lower than the average in Karnataka (15.7 percent). The population density is 365 people per square kilometer, higher than the state average (319 people per square kilometer). The district is clearly rural: only 17.1 percent of the population lives in cities. The degree of urbanization is therefore one of the lowest in Karnataka and is well below the average of 38.6 percent. The literacy rate is 70.4 percent, lower than the state average (76.1 percent).

According to the 2001 census , Hindus make up a large majority of the district's residents at 94.6 percent. For Islam , a small minority of 4.0 per cent committed.

According to the 1991 census, a large majority of 91.0 percent of the residents of Mandya District speak Kannada as their mother tongue. There are also minorities of speakers of Urdu (3.9 percent), Tamil (2.2 percent), Telugu (1.7 percent) and other languages (1.2 percent).

Attractions

Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple in Shrirangapattana

The main attraction of the Mandya district is the Shrirangapattana (Srirangapatna) located on a river island of the Kaveri . The small town was the capital of the Kingdom of Mysore from 1610 to 1799. The fortress, the summer palace ( Daria Daulat Bagh ) built by Tipu Sultan in 1784 and the Gumbaz mausoleum with the graves of Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan , built in the same year, are still reminiscent of this . Shrirangapattana also houses the Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple, an important Hindu pilgrimage site; the temple dates back to the 9th century and is one of three temples dedicated to God Vishnu on islands in the Kaveri River.

Another religious center in the Mandya district is Melukote , where the important Hindu philosopher Ramanuja is said to have worked around the turn of the 11th and 12th centuries. The Rameshvara temple near the village of Kikkeri, only 15 km southwest of Shravanabelagola , is rarely visited .

The Brindavan Gardens are also located in the Mandya district by the Krishnarajasagara dam . The approximately 60 hectare garden was completed between 1927 and 1932 for the Maharaja of Mysore. All of these attractions can be reached from nearby Mysore , so few tourists stay in the Mandya district.
