Haidar Ali or Hyder Ali (* 1721 in Sira , Maisur in South India, † December 7, 1782 in Narasingarayanpet ) was a South Indian general and an important opponent of the British East India Company .

Haidar Ali came from an Arab family who came to India around 1600. He lost his parents early and did not receive any schooling. He entered the service of the King of Mysore in 1728 . As a soldier, after receiving his distinction in the Karnataka War, he pursued an officer career. In 1755 he was given the command of Dindigul fortress . He was appointed Fateh Haidar Bahadur by the Raja because of his services in the fight against the Marathas . From 1761 he was de facto the ruler, but left the old ruling house to exist. In March 1765 he signed the Treaty of Ananthapur . He expanded into the Deccan , waged several wars (four Mysore Wars ) against the Marathas and the British , and was allied with the French. For the first time he successfully used military missiles . In 1782 he died unexpectedly in Chittoor ; his son, Tipu Sultan , succeeded him on the throne.
