The district of Gadag ( Kannada : ಗದಗ ಜಿಲ್ಲೆ ) is a district of the Indian state of Karnataka . The administrative seat is the eponymous city of Gadag .

The Gadag district is located in northern Karnataka. Neighboring districts are Dharwad in the west, Belgaum in the northeast, Bagalkot in the north, Koppal in the east, Bellary in the southeast and Haveri in the southwest.

The area of ​​the Gadag district is 4,652 square kilometers. The district area belongs to the highlands of Dekkan and is mostly a flat plateau with an average height of 600 to 700 meters above sea level. In the southeast of the district area rise the Kappatagudda Mountains, which reach heights of up to 978 meters.

The Gadag district is divided into the five taluks Nargund, Ron, Gadag, Shirhatti and Mundargi.

The Gadag district has existed as an independent district since 1997. The area had previously been part of the Dharwad district.

population

According to the 2001 census, the Gadag district has 1,065,235 inhabitants. This makes it one of the smaller districts of Karnataka. The population density of 229 inhabitants per square kilometer is also below the state average (319 inhabitants per square kilometer). Between 2001 and 2011, the population grew by 9.6 percent and thus more slowly than the average in Karnataka (15.7 percent). 35.7 percent of the residents of the Gadag district live in cities. The proportion of the urban population is thus close to the state average (38.6 percent). At 75.2 percent, the literacy rate also corresponds to the mean value in Karnataka (75.6 percent).

According to the 2001 census , Hindus make up the majority of the inhabitants of the Gadag district with 84.9 percent. There is also a Muslim minority of 13.0 percent.
