geography

The Udupi district is located in the coastal region in western Karnataka. Neighboring districts are Uttara Kannada in the north, Shimoga in the northeast, Chikmagalur in the east and Dakshina Kannada in the south. To the west lies the coast of the Arabian Sea . The Udupi District has an area of 3,875 square kilometers and is divided into the three taluks Udupi, Karkala and Kundapura.

Most of Dakshina Kannada belongs to the narrow coastal strip in western Karnataka. In the east rise the Western Ghats , which demarcate the coastal region from the highlands of the Dekkan . The landscape in the fertile coastal plain is shaped by rice fields and coconut palms. The district is traversed by several rivers. The most important are the Swarna and the Sita , which flow into a lagoon north of the district capital Udupi . A second large lagoon is located further north near Kundapura . There are several small islands in front of the coast.

history

The area of Udupi was conquered by the British in the Fourth Mysore War in 1799 and incorporated into the province of Madras as part of the Kanara district. In 1862 the district of Kanara was divided into the districts of South Kanara (now Dakshina Kannada ) and North Kanara (now Uttara Kannada ). The area of today's Udupi district came to South Kanara, which in 1956 became part of the newly formed state of Mysore (now Karnataka) according to the language borders of the Kannada . As an independent district, Udupi was formed in 1997 from the northern part of the Dakshina Kannada district.

Between 2001 and 2011, the population grew by 5.9 percent, which is lower than the average in Karnataka (15.7 percent). The population density of 304 inhabitants per square kilometer is roughly the average for the state (319 inhabitants per square kilometer). 28.4 percent of the population of the Udupi district live in cities. The degree of urbanization is thus slightly lower than the mean value in Karnataka (38.6 percent). At 86.3 percent, the literacy rate is one of the highest in the state and is well above the average in Karnataka (76.1 percent).

According to the 2001 census, Hindus make up the majority of the inhabitants of the Udupi district with 86.1 percent. There are also minorities of Muslims (7.5 percent) and Christians (5.9 percent). After Dakshina Kannada , the Udupi district has the second highest Christian population in Karnataka.

In addition to Kannada , the main language of Karnataka, Tulu , Konkani and Malayalam are also widespread in the Udupi district and in the coastal area adjacent to the south . Tulu is a regional language spoken in Udupi, Dakshina Kannada, and Kasaragod districts . Traditionally, the Swarna River marks the northern boundary of the Tulu area. Konkani is common among the Christian group of Mangalore Catholics ( Mangalorean Catholics ), who originally immigrated from Goa . Unlike in most of Karnataka, the majority of Muslims in the Udupi district do not speak Urdu , but a dialect of Malayalam.
