Udupi ( Kannada : ಉಡುಪಿ Uḍupi [ ˈuɖupi ]; also Udipi ) is a city in the Indian state of Karnataka with around 125,000 inhabitants (2011 census).
It is located in the west of Karnataka on the coast of the Arabian Sea 56 kilometers north of Mangalore . The city is the administrative seat of the Udupi district .
location
The national highway NH 17 and the Konkan Railway run through Udupi, both of which follow the course of the west coast. The suburb of Manipal , home to Manipal University, is five kilometers to the east . The beach town of Malpe is around six kilometers from the center of Udupi.
Cityscape and culture
There is an important Hindu temple in Udupi , which is dedicated to the god Krishna . It is said to have been founded in the 13th century by the Vishnuit philosopher Madhvacharya and is today the center of the Madhva sect that dates back to him. Attached to the temple are eight monasteries ( maths ), which alternately manage the Krishna temple. Udupi is also known for its cuisine. All over India there are "Udupi restaurants" that serve vegetarian South Indian specialties such as dosa .
Udupi is a center of the cultural tradition that is characteristic of the Tulu Nadu region in the southwest of Karnataka and is only cultivated here. These include the ritual theaters of Bhuta kola , Nagamandala and Ashlesha bali performed in temples , the Yakshagana dance theater and the annual festival for the Siri spirit Siri jatre .
