Ramanagara ( Kannada : ರಾಮನಗರ Rāmanagara [ ˈrɑːmʌnʌɡʌrʌ ]; also: Ramanagar , Ramanagaram ; formerly: Closepet ) is a city in the southern Indian state of Karnataka .

It is located in the southeast of Karnataka around 50 kilometers southwest of the capital Bangalore (Bengaluru). At the time of the 2011 Indian census, the population of Ramanagara was approximately 95,000. Since 2007 the city has been the administrative center of the newly established Ramanagara district .

During the British colonial period , Ramanagara was known as Closepet after the general Sir Barry Close (1756-1813) . After Indian independence, the city was renamed Ramanagara (" Rama City ").
