Yadgir ( Kannada : ಯಾದಗಿರಿ Yādagiri [ ˈjaːd̪əɡiri ]; also Yadagiri ) is a city in the Indian state of Karnataka with almost 75,000 inhabitants (2011 census).
It is the administrative seat of the district of the same name .
Yadgir is located in northeastern Karnataka 490 kilometers north of the capital Bangalore and 85 kilometers southeast of Gulbarga . It is only 35 kilometers to the border of the neighboring state of Andhra Pradesh . The city is located in the highlands of Dekkan at an altitude of 380 meters. In Yadgir, a single steep rock rises out of the otherwise flat environment, with a fortress on top. A few kilometers southwest of the Bhima River flows past Yadgir.
The name Yadgir (Yadagiri) is derived from the Yadava dynasty and the word giri for "mountain". The Yadava ruled the area from Devagiri from the 9th to 14th centuries and are believed to have built the Yadgir Fort. Yadgir was later under the rule of the Bahmani Sultanate , the Sultanate of Bijapur and the Mughal Empire , before the state of Hyderabad , which became independent in 1724 , came about . During the British colonial period , Hyderabad continued to exist as a nominally independent princely state under British sovereignty until 1947 . After Indian independence, Yadgir came to the state of Mysore in 1956 through the States Reorganization Act (renamed Karnataka in 1973). Formerly part of the Gulbarga district , Yadgir has been the administrative seat of its own district since 2010.
State Highway 16 runs through Yadgir from Raichur to Bidar . Located on the main line between Mumbai and Chennai , Yadgir has good rail links.
