The Archdiocese of Madurai ( Latin Archidioecesis Madhuraiensis ) is an archdiocese of the Roman Catholic Church in India with its seat in Madurai .

The Archdiocese of Madurai includes in the state of Tamil Nadu situated districts Madurai , Theni , Virudhunagar and the district Dindigul located talukas Batlagundu , Kodaikanal , Natham , Nilakkottai and four parishes in Taluka Dindigul .

history

The Archdiocese of Madurai was founded on January 8, 1938 by Pope Pius XI. Established with the Apostolic Constitution Si inter infideles from cession of territory by the Diocese of Trichinopoly as the Diocese of Madura and subordinated to the Archdiocese of Bombay as a suffragan . On October 21, 1950, the Diocese of Madura was renamed Diocese of Madurai .

The diocese of Madurai was on September 19, 1953 by Pope Pius XII. raised to the archbishopric with the apostolic constitution Cum ad aeternam . On May 17, 1973, the Archdiocese of Madurai gave parts of its territory to establish the Diocese of Palayamkottai . Further territorial assignments took place on July 3, 1987 to establish the Sivagangai diocese and on November 10, 2003 to establish the Dindigul diocese .
