The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Shillong ( Latin Archidioecesis Shillongensis ) is in India situated Roman Catholic Archdiocese based in Shillong .
The territory includes the districts of Ri-Bhoi and East Khasi Hills in the state of Meghalaya .
history
The Archdiocese of Shillong was on December 13, 1889 by Pope Leo XIII. from the cession of territory by the diocese of Krishnagar as the Apostolic Prefecture of Assam . The Apostolic Prefecture of Assam was founded on July 9, 1934 by Pope Pius XI. with the Apostolic Constitution Uberius ac felicius raised to the diocese and renamed the Diocese of Shillong . It was subordinated to the Archdiocese of Calcutta as a suffragan . On July 12, 1951, the Shillong Diocese gave parts of its territory to establish the Diocese of Dibrugarh . Another assignment of territory took place on January 16, 1964 to establish the diocese of Tezpur .
The diocese of Shillong was on June 26, 1969 by Pope Paul VI. raised to an archdiocese with the Apostolic Constitution Christi sponsa and renamed the Archdiocese of Guwahati-Shillong . The Archdiocese of Guwahati-Shillong was renamed the Archdiocese of Shillong-Guwahati on January 22, 1970 . On March 1, 1973, the Archdiocese of Shillong-Guwahati gave parts of its territory to establish the Diocese of Tura . Another assignment of territory took place on December 5, 1983 to establish the Diphu diocese . On March 30, 1992, the Archdiocese of Shillong-Guwahati was divided into the Archdiocese of Shillong and the Diocese of Guwahati . The Archdiocese of Shillong gave up on January 28, 2006 parts of its territory to establish the dioceses of Nongstoin and Jowai .
