The diocese Krishnagar ( lat. : Dioecesis Krishnagarensis ) is in India situated Roman Catholic diocese based in Krishnanagar , State of West Bengal .
history
Pope Pius IX founded the Mission sui juris Zentralbengalen with the Apostolic Constitution Christi regno on 1855 from cession of territory by the Apostolic Vicariate West Bengal .
On July 19, 1870, she was promoted to the Apostolic Prefecture . On September 1, 1886, she was raised to the diocese, which was subordinated to the Archdiocese of Calcutta as a suffragan diocese.
In the following year the diocese took its current name. The cathedral was destroyed by an earthquake in 1897 and rebuilt two years later.
It later lost parts of its territory in favor of the establishment of new dioceses:
- December 15, 1889 to the Apostolic Prefecture of Assam ;
- May 25, 1927 to the Diocese of Dinajpur ;
- January 3, 1952 to the Diocese of Khulna .
