Apostolic Prefecture

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

An apostolic prefecture is a probationary diocese in mission areas . The survey to Prefecture turns a mission sui Juris canonically a diocese equal standing part Church (Can. 368 CIC ). The Apostolic Prefecture is an early stage before the elevation to a regular diocese. In the middle of the 20th century there were hardly any Apostolic Prefectures left. Under Pope John Paul II their number increased again.

A prefecture is headed by an Apostolic Prefect , who is rarely a bishop , but has full jurisdiction over the prefectural area, like a diocesan bishop . If the prefecture proves viable, it will be elevated to the position of Vicariate Apostolic and a titular bishop as ordinary . The prefect wears the clothes and insignia of a bishop even though he has not yet received episcopal ordination.

The office of the Apostolic Prefect does not take place under his own authority, but with ordinary, vicarious authority on behalf of the Pope. In the event of a vacancy , the leadership of the particular church is taken over by the Pro-Prefect.
