The Apostolic Prefecture of Western Sahara ( lat. : Apostolica de praefectura Sahara Occidentali ) is in Western Sahara located Roman Catholic Apostolic Prefecture , located in El Aaiun .
The Apostolic Prefecture Sahara Occidental was founded on July 5, 1954 under the name of Apostolic Prefecture Spanish Sahara and Ifni from areas of the Apostolic Vicariate Rabat and the Diocese of Canary Islands and changed this name to Spanish Sahara (Sahara Español) on May 2, 1970 . On May 2, 1976, the current name of the Apostolic Prefecture of Western Sahara was adopted .
The 250,000 km² mission area , which is looked after by the Oblates , has its headquarters in El Aaiún . In 1976 there were still 365 Catholics in this area, the number fell to 100 by 2002. However, the number of religious priests has remained stable at 3, as has the number of parishes with 2. Félix Erviti Barcelona was the first prefect . He was followed in 1994 by Acacio Valbuena Rodríguez , who died in 2011. On June 24, 2013, Pope Francis appointed Mario León Dorado OMI as the new prefect after a long vacancy .
