The Archdiocese of Tangiers ( lat. : Archidioecesis Tingitana ) is in Morocco situated Roman Catholic archdiocese , based in Tangier . The 28,000 km² archbishopric essentially comprises the former protectorate area of Spain in Morocco .

history

Already around the year 325 a diocese of Tingis is proven, which later perished like all North African dioceses due to the onslaught of Islam. A Spanish Dominican named Alfonsus Bonihominis has come down to us as bishop from 1344 . In 1469 the diocese of Morocco or Tangier was founded from the Spanish diocese of Ceuta , which was reunited with Ceuta in 1570.

The Archdiocese of Tangier was re-established as the Apostolic Prefecture for Morocco in Tangier from the Diocese of Ceuta on November 28, 1630 , rose to the Apostolic Vicariate on April 14, 1908 , and gave up parts of its territory on July 2, 1923 to establish the Vicariate Apostolic Rabat and was finally raised to an immediate archbishopric on November 14, 1956 .

Before the independence of Morocco (1956), the Archdiocese of Tangier had almost 115,000 believers; in 1980 there were only 9,750. In 2014 there were still 2,500 Catholics out of a total population of 4,175,000 in this region. In 1950 there were 22 diocesan priests , 50 religious priests , 114 friars and 211 religious sisters in 15 parishes .

In 2017 there were only 15 religious priests, 21 religious brothers and 77 religious sisters in 7 parishes in the Archdiocese of Tangier. The number of members of the Catholic Church in the Archdiocese of Tangier is given as 3000. Caritas Morocco is represented in three Caritas centers in Rabat, Tangier and Casablanca.

It is not without interest that the diocese of Tangier is one of the mission areas of the Franciscan order , which still provides its bishops today .
