The Cathedral of Tangier , dedicated to the Assumption of Mary , is the seat of the Catholic Archdiocese of the Moroccan port city of Tangier .

The cathedral stands in a prominent position on avenue Hassan II in the new town (Ville nouvelle) of Tangier; it is less than 1 km (by foot) in a south-westerly direction from the old town (medina) .

History and architecture

The modern-looking, single-tower cathedral was planned and built at the beginning of the 1960s by the Spanish architect Luis Martìnez-Feduchi Ruiz; it was consecrated in 1961. The single-nave construction is essentially a concrete structure ; The masonry and glass windows are clamped between the pillars, with particular emphasis on the three central windows of the semicircular apse .

  • The bones of the Franciscan Father José Maria Lerchundi, who died in 1896 and who lived in Morocco from 1862 until his death and served as translator for various sultans, rest in the crypt . In addition, he installed a printing house.
