Saint Andreas Church (Tangier)
The Church of Saint Andrew ( English Church of Saint Andrew ) is an Anglican church building built from 1894 in the city of Tangier in Morocco . It belongs to the Archdeaconry Gibraltar in the Diocese in Europe of the Church of England .
history
In 1880, the Alawid King Hassan I of Morocco donated land to the British community so that they could build a small Anglican church in Tangier. After the church was built, however, it was found that there was not enough space for the growing number of believers, so in 1894 a new building, the Church of St. Andrew, was built; this was inaugurated in 1905. The interior has been designed as a mixture of several styles, especially Moorish . The church tower has the shape of a minaret and dominates the adjoining cemetery.

Emily Keene, Scherifa von Ouezzane (1849–1944), who introduced the cholera vaccine in Morocco , is one of the people who are commemorated in St. Andrew's Church . She was a British philanthropist or humanist who married the Sharef of Ouezzane, a local religious leader. She died in Tangier, and there is a plaque on the west side of the church to commemorate her; her actual grave is in the family crypt in the Marshan district of Tangier, which overlooks the Strait of Gibraltar .
Buried on the church grounds are Sir Harry Aubrey de Vere Maclean (1848–1920), Paul Lund (1915–1966) and the British writer Walter Harris (1866–1933). In addition , Claire de Menasce, who was born in Alexandria , and her second husband, commanding Roy Howell RN, are buried in the small cemetery; likewise Claude-Marie Vincendon, her second daughter from her first marriage, who was the wife of Lawrence Durrell .
