The Archbishopric of Rabat ( Latin Archidioecesis Rabatensis ) is located in Morocco and is the seat of a Catholic Archbishop. With an area of almost 400,000 km² and an extension of over 2,000 kilometers from the north to the south of Morocco, it includes almost all areas of the former French protectorate zone , including the metropolis of Casablanca .

history

The Archdiocese of Rabat was founded on July 2, 1923 as the Apostolic Vicariate out of the Apostolic Vicariate of Morocco . After parts of its territory were spun off as the apostolic prefecture Spanish-Sahara and Ifni on July 5, 1954 , it was raised to an immediate archbishopric on September 14, 1955 .

The end of the protectorate period in 1956 led to a profound restructuring in the archdiocese, as in the other dioceses in North Africa . The Maghreb states are a classic mission area of various Christian religious orders , which to this day always provide the bishops of most of the dioceses .

In 1950 there were around 360,000 Catholic Christians in 57 parishes in the Archdiocese of Rabat. In 2017 the number of parishes shrank to 28 with 20,000 members. Caritas Morocco is represented in three Caritas centers in Rabat, Tangier and Casablanca.

The St. Peter's Cathedral in Rabat is an important church building . There are other Catholic churches in cities such as Agadir , Tétouan , Fès as well as the Church of Our Lady of Lourdes in Casablanca and the important Church of the Holy Martyrs in Marrakech .
