The Cooperative of the Priests of the Sacred Heart of Jesus , also known as Priests of Bétharram ( Latin : Societas Presbyterorum Sanctissimi Cordis Iesu de Bétharram ), is a cooperative of Catholic priests . The abbreviation of the order of the congregation is SCI di Béth. (also SCJBeth or SCJ ).

history

The priests cooperative was 1834/35 by the Basque priest Michael Garicoits founded (1797-1863) and should according to his ideas in the school - and the education sector work. Initially, the foundation had to struggle with resistance, as it was not approved by all relevant people in the Diocese of Bayonne . It was not until July 30, 1875 - twelve years after the death of the founder - that it received a decretum laudis and on September 5, 1877 ecclesiastical recognition, which was confirmed on September 6, 1901 with the approval as an institute under papal law . The parent company is located in Lestelle-Bétharram in France, the place where the founder worked. The community spread outside France in response to requests from mission countries, but also due to historical conditions such as the expulsion of Catholic religious orders from France in 1879. During the founder's lifetime, the priests of Bétharram gained a foothold in Argentina and Uruguay , where they are still today an important regional focus of the community is located. It also spread to the Holy Land at the end of the 1870s, which the order owes above all to the cooperation with Discalced Carmelite Sisters who set out from the French Basque Country to establish foundations in Bethlehem and Nazareth in 1875 and were accompanied by Bétharram priests.

Today's distribution

The cooperative is divided into three regions and has branches in around 14 countries, in addition to France in particular in Spain , Italy , the Holy Land ( Israel , Palestine , Jordan ), the Ivory Coast and the Central African Republic (so-called Francophone region, St. Michael Garicoïts ), in the United Kingdom , in India and Thailand (so-called Anglophone Region, St. Miriam of Jesus Crucified ) and in Latin America (Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay and Brazil , Fr. Auguste Etchécopar region ). The General Curia has its seat in Rome. Gaspar Fernández Pérez has been the community's superior general since 2005 .
