Michael Garicoits
Michael Garicoits , French Michel Garicoïts (born April 15, 1797 in Ibarre , Basque Country (France) , † May 14, 1863 in Bétharram , Pyrénées-Atlantiques ) was a French Catholic priest and founder and first superior of the Cooperative of Priests of the Most Holy Heart of Jesus of Bétharram paved the way for Christian school teaching. He was canonized by the Catholic Church .
Life
The son of a small farmer was on 20 December 1823, the Bayonne to the ordained priesthood . In 1825 he was appointed economist and professor of theology to the decrepit seminary of Bétharram and in 1831 its Regens . When the seminary was moved to Bayonne, he stayed in Bétharram as a priest at a pilgrimage church . Later he became director of the pilgrimage site and pastor of the order of the "Cross Daughters" ( Congrégation des Filles de la Croix ; also called "Andrew Sisters") and its founder, St. Johanna Elisabeth Bichier des Ages . This decisively supported his plan to found a priestly association to promote Christian school teaching. The local bishop approved the project, and in 1835 Garicoits founded an institute with five priests, which in 1841 assumed the final name Societas Sacratissimi Cordis Iesu - Bétharram (SJC) ( Cooperative Society of Priests of the Sacred Heart of Jesus of Bétharram ).
The association of priests spread rapidly in southwest France and later in South America, especially Argentina and Uruguay .
Michale Garicoits was born on March 15, 1923 by Pope Pius XI. beatified and on July 6, 1947 by Pope Pius XII. canonized . His feast day is May 14th .
