history
Agadir was founded in 1505 by Portuguese sailors . In 1541 the Saadians conquered the city. In 1751 King Frederick V of Denmark tried - ultimately unsuccessfully - by concluding a friendship and trade treaty with Mulai Muhammad , the governor of Marrakech, Danish bases in what is now Agadir ( Santa Cruz do Cabo de Gué or Cabo de Aguer ) and in Safi to build.
In 1911, at the height of Franco-German tensions and rivalries over Morocco, Germany dispatched the gunboats SMS Panther and SMS Eber and the small cruiser SMS Berlin to Agadir. The incident, known as the Panther Leap to Agadir , which almost led to a major European war, prompted France to declare Morocco a French protected area in 1912 (in the Protectorate Treaty of November 1912 it was divided into the protectorates of French Morocco and Spanish Morocco (im North); for details see History of Morocco ).
On the evening of February 29, 1960, the city was devastated by an earthquake , killing around 10,000 to 15,000 people. Apart from the Kasbah (240 meters above sea level), Agadir has only a few historical buildings today. Many nations helped Agadir rebuild . Switzerland even built up a whole quarter (“Swiss Quarter”).
In 1975, the most serious plane crash in Morocco so far occurred in front of the city, killing 188 .
economy
Agadir is located in a mining area with cobalt , manganese and zinc deposits , which are shipped via the natural harbor. Tourism , fishing and fish processing as well as the manufacture of metal goods are the most important branches of the economy alongside mining . Tourism in particular has been strongly promoted in recent years through the targeted construction of holiday complexes in and outside the city.
Al Massira International Airport (IATA code AGA , ICAO code GMAD ) was used by 1.4 million passengers in 2006. It also offers direct connections to numerous European commercial airports.
