The Prinz Hamlet or Prince Hamlet II was a ferry that was built in 1969 and scrapped in 2007. It was one of the first car ferries built by Meyer and was later seen as the "prototype" of the Papenburg car ferries .

history

The ship was built in 1969 at Meyer Werft in Papenburg and had the hull number 545. The hull was launched on May 13, 1969, and in August 1969 the ship was delivered to its first owner, Nordland Fähre GmbH. His first home port was Cuxhaven . It only had its first name, Vikingfjord , until 1970. At that time it drove between Cuxhaven and Stavanger or Bergen in Norway and was then chartered out several times and used on other routes.

It was then moved to Hamburg and renamed Prince Hamlet . His callsign was now DFDP. The ship replaced a predecessor ship of the same name , which was built in Finland in 1966.

The hull of the ship was originally painted dark. As Prince Hamlet , however, the ship was painted white. The Prinz Hamlet operated the ferry connection between Hamburg and Harwich until it was replaced by a new ship , which was also named Prinz Hamlet .

In 1974 the ship was sold to the Cie. Nationale Algerienne de Nav. Sold. From then on it operated under the Algerian flag under the name Agadir and had Algiers as its home port. The Agadir was a ferry service between Morocco and France .

From 1986 to 1999 the ship sailed under the name Ouranos under the Cypriot flag and had Limassol as its home port. His callsign at that time was C4DO and owned by Avondale Navigation Co. Ltd. The Ouranos initially sailed the Patras - Igoumenitsa - Corfu - Brindisi route ; from 1994 she stopped calling at Patras. After Fragline bought the ship Ariadne from Minoan Lines in 1999, the Ouranos was sold and the former Ariadne was renamed Ouranos .

Afterwards the ship, now owned by Acorline Transportes Mar. SA, sailed between the Azores as Golfinho Azul under the flag of Panama . His home port during these years was Panama, the callsign HOER. From this time on there were always safety concerns and requirements and the Golfinho Azul was also advertised for sale, but apparently no longer found any interested parties. On November 14, 2003, the ship was blacklisted due to safety deficiencies . From then on, it was no longer allowed to call at any EU ports .

In 2006 another change of ownership followed, which was accompanied by another name change. The ship was now called the Gulf and belonged to Princess Cruise Panama Inc.

On January 6, 2007, the demolition of the ferry began at the scrapping yards near Alang .

A model of the Prince Hamlet is in the International Maritime Museum Hamburg .
