The Oued Souss ( Arabic واد سوس; Pocket hit ⴰⵙⵉⴼ ⵏ ⵙⵓⵙ ; also Assif n'Souss or east of Taroudannt Assif Tifnout ) is one of the longest and most water-rich rivers of southern Morocco .
geography
The approx. 190 km long and comparatively water-rich river has its source in the Toubkal massif in the High Atlas and then runs in a south-westerly direction. It is dammed three times - the largest and longest reservoir is located south of Taroudannt - and finally flows into the Atlantic about 10 km south of Agadir and 8 km west of Inezgane .
economy
The Oued Souss is of great importance for the drinking water supply in southern Morocco and for the irrigation of the agricultural areas in the Souss plain , which is one of the most productive growing areas in all of Morocco.
history
The history of the settlement of the Souss plain by originally nomadic Berber peoples goes back a long way. The first written records date from the 11th century and deal with the sugar cane cultivation imported by the Arabs in the 8th century , which was one of Morocco's most important export goods until well into the 18th and 19th centuries, when it faced competition from beet sugar in Europe and no longer plays a major role today. After that, large areas were used for growing grain, vegetables and fruit.
Nature reserve
The approximately 60 km long and 5 km wide coastal zone south of the mouth of the Oued Souss has been designated as the Souss Massa National Park (Parc national de Souss-Massa) since 1991 .
