New York City Department of Sanitation
The New York City Department of Sanitation or DSNY for short is a municipal waste disposal service company responsible for garbage collection , recycling , street cleaning and snow removal in the city of New York , United States . As uniformed workers, the workers are part of the unionized garbage workers (Local 831 of Teamsters USA) of New York City. Like most of the uniformed forces of New York have a nickname: New York's Strongest ( New York's Strongest ). The section of Worth Street between Center and Baxter Streets in Downtown Manhattan is named Avenue of the Strongest in their honor .
The New York City Department of Sanitation is the largest urban cleaning company in the world, with 7,200 uniformed garbage collectors and supervisors, 2,041 civilian employees, 2,230 trucks, 275 specialized trucks, 450 street sweepers, 365 salt and sand spreaders, 298 front wheel loaders, 2,360 escort vehicles, moving more than 12,000 tons of residential and commercial waste and recyclables per day. Under Commissioner John J. Doherty, New York's streets were believed to be the cleanest streets in more than 30 years. Commissioner Kathryn Garcia has been running the DSNY since April 1, 2014.
Company history
DSNY was founded in 1881 as a street cleaning department. One of the division's first commissioners, Col. George E. Waring, Jr. , pioneered current practices such as recycling, street cleaning and a special uniformed municipal cleaning and waste collection staff. Since August 1, 2013, Shari Pardini, as 3-star chief, has been elevated to this rank for the first time in the history of the department.
Sovereign tasks
The New York City Department of Sanitation has its own police force, composed of four specialized units:
- Uniformed Sanitation Police Force
- Illegal Dumping Task Force
- Permit and Inspection Unit
- Environmental Police Unit
These include uniformed and undercover agents who enforce waste and sanitation regulations and laws in addition to state and urban traffic and criminal law in the five boroughs of New York City.
DSNY officers are NYS ( Peace Officers ) and certified by the NYS Municipal Training Council. DSNY officers may carry a firearm , use handcuffs, and make arrests with the consent of the NYPD while on duty . Furthermore, they are entitled to use physical and also fatal force to carry out their tasks ( sovereignty ). The police use marked patrol cars and civilian vehicles for their work.
