Ali Anouzla

Ali Anouzla ( Central Atlas Tamazight ⵄⴰⵍⵉ ⴰⵏⵓⵥⵍⴰ Ɛali Anuẓla ; * 1963 in Agadir ) is a Moroccan journalist . Anouzla is the editor-in-chief of the internet newspaper Lakome.com and is known for his critical reporting on King Mohammed VI.

Lakome , which appears in an Arabic and a French-language edition, is considered by foreign observers to be "the most courageous medium in the country". On September 17, 2013, Anouzla was arrested for allegedly supporting a terrorist organization because he had linked in an article to the Spanish daily El País , which informed its readers about a video by the radical Islamist group al-Qaeda in the Maghreb . After Anouzla's arrest, Aboubakr Jamaï , co-founder of Lakome , took over responsibility for the internet newspaper .

After more than five weeks in detention, Ali Anouzla was provisionally released on October 25, 2013. However, the charges of supporting a terrorist group remain in force. If convicted, the sentence would range from 10 to 30 years in prison.

On May 3, 2014, International Press Freedom Day , he was awarded the “Freedom of Information Heroes” award by Reporters Without Borders .

Anouzla was honored with the first Raif Badawi Award in 2015.
