Day trip
A day trip (or day tour ) in the travel industry is an excursion without an overnight stay , which is used for recreation and leisure or education .
General
The negative definition of a day trip describes every leaving of the living environment that is not associated with an overnight stay and is not considered a commute to work or school , does not serve as a shopping trip to meet daily needs (e.g. grocery shopping ) and does not follow a certain routine or regularity subject to (e.g. recreational sports , frequent hospital visits, doctor visits, official visits, visits to church services). A day tourist is a person who (in contrast to an overnight guest ) visits a place , a region or a sight for just a day or even for an hour without spending the night here. According to the definition of the Duden , this describes a “ tourist for the duration of one day”.

Day trips include externally organized or self-organized trips exclusively with a private motive such as butter trips , coffee trips , museum visits , cycling tours , round trips , sightseeing , city trips or hiking tours that do not last longer than a day.
The following applies in Germany: A day trip booked from the place of residence is considered part of a trip, but is not a package tour in accordance with Section 651a (5) No. 2 BGB . The day trip, however, is also carried out from the travel destination and can therefore also be part of a package tour.

Day tourism is meanwhile the predominant form of tourism in Germany with the highest number of individual visitors. According to figures from the Chamber of Industry and Commerce Hanover , 2.84 billion day trippers spent in Germany in 2011 with an average of 28 euros in total (gross) around 79.5 billion euros and 564 million euros Daily business travelers € 14.2 billion. Other surveys also assume value added between € 20 and € 30 per day tourist. The city of Berlin has even determined an average value of € 32.50 per visitor over the last few years with 132 million daily visitors. The numbers are i. d. Usually collected through a representative survey in the source area (survey at the place of residence). Occasion for a day stay often visits to local attractions or sights, the visit of sports and leisure facilities, museums, cultural events such as musicals, opera / operetta, concert and theater performances or merely a stay for shopping in the shops of the city.
Another reason for day visits are economic reasons. Around a quarter to a third of day tourists are business travelers who either maintain contacts with business partners on site, visit trade fairs , congresses or exhibitions , or are traveling as sales representatives .
