overview

The Church of the Holy Martyrs was built in 1928 for the European Community of the City of Marrakech and inaugurated in 1929. The church building is located on avenue Mohammed V in Guéliz, in the old European quarter near the heart of Marrakech city center.

The church is dedicated to the five Franciscan martyrs of Marrakech, including Berard of Carbio , whom Francis of Assisi sent to North Africa and who were executed in 1220, not far from the location of the present church.

The church comprises a large rectangular room with a small apse in which the altar is located. There is a small organ gallery in the entrance area.

The church is still served by Franciscan priests for the foreign parish of Marrakech and is incorporated into the Archdiocese of Rabat . It is the only Roman Catholic church in the region.

Like all Christian churches and monasteries in Morocco, this church is monitored day and night by the Moroccan police to protect against attacks and unauthorized access and to guarantee access to the prayer of the Catholic faithful.
