Cristóbal Cardinal López Romero SDB (born May 19, 1952 in Vélez-Rubio , Spain ) is a Spanish religious and Roman Catholic Archbishop of Rabat .
Life
Cristóbal López Romero attended the Salesian high school in Girona . He joined the Order of the Salesians of Don Bosco in 1964 and made his first profession on August 16, 1968 . López Romero studied from 1973 to 1975 philosophy and 1975-1979 Catholic theology at the seminary of the Salesians in Barcelona . López Romero made his solemn profession on August 2, 1974. He received on 19 May 1979, the sacrament of Holy Orders . In 1982 he graduated from the Autonomous University of Barcelona with a degree in information science .
From 1979 to 1984 Cristóbal López Romero worked as a pastor in the La Verneda i la Pau district of Barcelona before he went to Paraguay and became a pastor at the College of Salesians in Asunción . From 1986 to 1992 he was a delegate for youth ministry . He was also the director of the Salesian newspaper in Asunción from 1991 to 1992. In 1992 López Romero became parish priest in Asunción. From 1994 to 2000 he was Provincial of the Paraguayan Province of the Salesians of Don Bosco before becoming director and teacher at the College of Salesians in Asunción.
From 2003 to 2011 López Romero was director of the Salesian Training Center in Kenitra , Morocco , before becoming Provincial of the Bolivia Province of the Salesians of Don Bosco. Since 2014, Cristóbal López Romero was Provincial of the Province of María Auxiliadora in Spain.
On December 29, 2017, Pope Francis appointed him Archbishop of Rabat.
On September 1, 2019, Pope Francis announced that he would be admitted to the College of Cardinals as a cardinal priest in the consistory of October 5, 2019 . When the cardinal was created, the Pope assigned him the titular church of San Leone Magno on October 5, 2019 . The takeover of his titular church took place on February 16 of the following year. On February 21, 2020, Pope Francis appointed him a member of the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue .
