The Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue ( Latin : Pontificium Consilium pro Dialogo Inter Religiones ; English Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue ; abbreviation PCID ) coordinates the activities of the Roman Curia in dialogue with other religions .

history

The council was founded on Pentecost in 1964 by Pope Paul VI. set up as a secretariat for non-Christians . Through the Apostolic Constitution Pastor Bonus of June 28, 1988, issued by John Paul II , the Secretariat was given its present name and became a permanent dicastery of the Roman Curia . Pope Benedict XVI in 2006 incorporated the council into the Pontifical Council for Culture . As a result of the Regensburg speech by Pope Benedict XVI. on September 12, 2006, he re-established the Council for Interreligious Dialogue 2007 as an independent dicastery. The Pontifical Commission for Religious Relations with Muslims is affiliated to the Council.

task

Pope Paul VI formulated the task of the council:

“Looking for methods and ways to open a corresponding dialogue with non-Christians. It [the Secretariat] therefore works to ensure that non-Christians are properly known and justly assessed by Christians and that non-Christians for their part can get to know and appreciate the teaching and life of Christians accordingly ”.

In 2012, the message for the end of Ramadan was noted with further attention by the President of the Council, Jean-Louis Cardinal Tauran .
