Dieudonné Cardinal Nzapalainga CSSp (born March 14, 1967 in Mbomou ) is a Central African religious and Roman Catholic Archbishop of Bangui .

Life

Nzapalainga attended the Saint Louis Minor Seminary in Bangassou . He then studied philosophy at the Saints Apôtres seminary in Otélé and Catholic theology at the Spiritan seminary in Libreville . On September 8, 1993 Nzapalainga entered the religious community of Spiritans and made temporary profession . He made his perpetual profession on September 6, 1997. On August 9, 1998, Dieudonné Nzapalainga received the sacrament of ordination .

Nzapalainga graduated from the Center Sèvres in France with a degree in Catholic theology . From 1998 to 2005 he was chaplain of the Fondation d'Auteuil and vicar in the parish of Saint Jerôme in Marseille . In 2005 Dieudonné Nzapalainga became regional superior of the Spiritans in the Central African Republic and pastor in Bangui . From 2008 to 2009 he was also President of the Conference of Superiors in the Central African Republic. Dieudonné Nzapalainga was appointed Apostolic Administrator of Bangui on May 26, 2009 after the resignation of Archbishop Paulin Pomodimo .

On May 14, 2012, Pope Benedict XVI appointed him . to the Archbishop of Bangui. The Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples , Cardinal Fernando Filoni , ordained him episcopal on July 22nd of the same year ; Co- consecrators were the Apostolic Nuncio to the Central African Republic, Archbishop Jude Thaddeus Okolo , and the Bishop of Bambari , Edouard Mathos . His inauguration took place on July 29, 2012. On September 13, 2014 Pope Francis appointed him a member of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples. On September 1, 2015, together with Imam Oumar Kobine Layama, he received the Aachen Peace Prize for their commitment to peacefully settling the armed conflict in the Central African Republic and their efforts in understanding between the religions. The archbishop granted the imam and 10,000 other refugees asylum on church soil. Both of them often negotiate personally with rebels and obtain the release of hostages, regardless of their religious affiliation. In April 2016 he was honored with the Four Freedoms Award in the religious freedom category in Middelburg , the Netherlands .

In the consistory of November 19, 2016, Pope Francis accepted him as a cardinal priest with the titular church of Sant'Andrea della Valle in the college of cardinals . On December 18 of the same year he took possession of his titular church. With his elevation he is the world's youngest cardinal and the first cardinal from the Central African Republic.

On July 8, 2020, Pope Francis appointed him a member of the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue .
