The Archdiocese of Bangui ( Latin Archidioecesis Banguensis ) is a Roman Catholic Archdiocese based in Bangui in the Central African Republic . It includes the prefecture of Ombella-Mpoko and the special status city of Bangui.
history
Pope Pius X. founded the Apostolic Prefecture Oubangui-Chari on May 8, 1909 from cessions of territory from the Apostolic Vicariate of Upper French Congo. With the Apostolic Constitution Si christiana res she was elevated to the Apostolic Vicariate on December 2, 1937.
On May 28, 1940, it was named the Apostolic Vicariate Bangui . With the Papal Bull Dum tantis on September 14, 1955 it was elevated to the rank of Metropolitan Archbishopric .
It lost parts of its territory in favor of the establishment of the following dioceses:
- May 28, 1940 to the Apostolic Prefecture of Berbérati ;
- June 14, 1954 to the Apostolic Prefecture of Bangassou ;
- December 18, 1965 to the diocese of Bambari ;
- June 10, 1995 to the diocese of Mbaïki ;
- June 28, 1997 to the diocese of Kaga-Bandoro .
