Fernando Cardinal Filoni (born April 15, 1946 in Manduria , Taranto Province , Italy ) is a Cardinal Curia of the Roman Catholic Church and diplomat of the Holy See . He was Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples from 2011 to 2019 and has been Cardinal Grand Master of the Order of Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem since 2019 .

Life

Fernando Filoni attended secondary school in Galatone and high school at the Episcopal Seminary in Nardò. He studied philosophy at the Pontifical Regional Seminary of Apulia "Pio XI" in Molfetta and theology at the seminary in Viterbo. On July 3, 1970, he received the sacrament of ordination through Antonio Rosario Mennonna in the Collegiate Church of Galatone . He completed a doctorate in canon law at the Pontifical Lateran University in Rome and a doctorate in philosophy at the Roman University of La Sapienza . He completed a degree in journalism at the Libera Università Internazionale degli Studi Sociali .

In 1982 he entered the diplomatic service of the Holy See and was given the honorary title of chaplain of His Holiness ( Monsignor ) on October 9 of the same year by Pope John Paul II . First he served in the Apostolic Nunciatures of Sri Lanka (1982–1983) and Iran (1983–1985). From 1985 to 1989 he worked in the Vatican State Secretariat and then worked again in the Apostolic Nunciatures of Brazil (1989–1992) and the Philippines (1992–2001).

On January 17, 2001, Pope John Paul II appointed him Apostolic Nuncio to Iraq and Jordan and Titular Archbishop of Volturnum . The episcopal ordination donated him Pope John Paul II. Himself on March 19 of that year, co-consecrators were Angelo Cardinal Sodano and Giovanni Battista Cardinal Re . He was the only foreign diplomat to remain in Baghdad during the Iraq war , which earned him the nickname Nuncio Courage . On February 25, 2006, Pope Benedict XVI. the task of the Apostolic Nuncio in the Philippines, which he already knew from his previous nine years of activity.

Pope Benedict XVI appointed Archbishop Filoni on June 9, 2007 to succeed Leonardo Sandri as a substitute for the Vatican State Secretariat. This office is known as the "Ministry of the Interior" of the Vatican . The substitute is the only one who has a daily appointment with the Pope.

On May 10, 2011 he was welcomed by Pope Benedict XVI. appointed as the prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples ("Missionary Congregation") in the succession of Ivan Cardinal Dias .

In the solemn consistory of February 18, 2012, Benedict XVI took him. as a cardinal deacon with the title deaconry Nostra Signora di Coromoto in San Giovanni di Dio in the cardinals college. Cardinal Filoni attended the 2013 conclave , in which Pope Francis was elected.

On September 21, 2013 Fernando Filoni and the entire leadership of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples were confirmed permanently in office by Pope Francis. On the occasion of the Iraq crisis in 2014 , Pope Francis sent Cardinal Filoni in August 2014 as the papal special envoy on a peace mission to Iraq. The same elevated him to cardinal bishop with effect from June 28, 2018 while retaining his titular church . On December 8, 2019, Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle was appointed by Pope Francis to succeed him as Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples.

Fernando Filoni speaks French, Spanish, English and Portuguese. Filoni considered an expert on China and the Middle and the Middle East .

Order of Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem

On December 8, 2019, Fernando Filoni was appointed Grand Master of the Order of Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem by Pope Francis . He succeeded Edwin Frederick Cardinal O'Brien , whose retirement petition for old age was granted by Pope Francis.

With a Holy Mass Filoni was in church on Feb. 1, 2020 Santo Spirito in Sassia the Cardinal Grand Master of the Pontifical Equestrian Order of the Holy grave in Jerusalem and an official reception at the Palazzo Della Rovere , the seat of the Order in the Via della Conciliazione enthroned, .
