Ivan Cornelius Cardinal Dias (born April 14, 1936 in Bombay , India , † June 19, 2017 in Rome ) was a Curia Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church .

Life

Ivan Dias studied in Bombay and Rome trays Catholic theology and philosophy , doctorate at the Lateran University in canon law , and received on 8 December 1958 under Valerian Cardinal Gracias the priesthood for the Archdiocese of Bombay . From 1958 to 1961 he worked as a parish chaplain in Bombay before further studies led him back to Rome from 1961. In 1964 he joined the Vatican State Secretariat and worked in the diplomatic service in the Scandinavian countries, Indonesia, Madagascar, Réunion, Comoros, Mauritius and finally in the Vatican State Secretariat, where he headed the section for the Soviet Union, Baltic States, Belarus, Ukraine, Poland, Bulgaria, China, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, South Africa, Namibia, Lesotho, Swaziland, Zimbabwe, Ethiopia, Rwanda, Burundi, Uganda, Zambia, Kenya and Tanzania. He was among other things in the preparation of the participation of Pope Paul VI. involved in the International Eucharistic Congress in Bombay.

From 1965 to 1973 Ivan Dias worked as secretary of various Apostolic Nunciatures around the world. From 1973 to 1982 he was in charge of the department for the Soviet Union , Poland , China , Vietnam , Laos and several countries in southern Africa in the Vatican State Secretariat . Pope John Paul II awarded him the title of Honorary Prelate of His Holiness on April 10, 1981 .

On May 8, 1982 Pope John Paul II appointed him titular archbishop of Rusibisir and pro-nuncio for the countries of Ghana , Togo and Benin . The episcopal ordination received his Cardinal Secretary of State Agostino Casaroli on 19 June of the same year; Co-consecrators were the Curia Archbishops Achille Silvestrini and Duraisamy Simon Lourdusamy .

On June 20, 1987, he was appointed Apostolic Nuncio in Korea and on October 28, 1991, Apostolic Nuncio in Albania , the first Apostolic Nuncio in the history of Albania.

Nov. 8, 1996 John Paul II appointed him. Archbishop of Bombay and took him on 21 February 2001 as a cardinal priest with the titular church of Spirito Santo alla Ferratella into the College of Cardinals on.

Dias participated in the 2005 conclave , in which Benedict XVI. was chosen. On May 20, 2006, he appointed Dias Cardinal Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples . On May 10, 2011, Pope Benedict XVI. Cardinal Dias's motion to resign from the office of Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples, for reasons of age. Archbishop Fernando Filoni was appointed as his successor .

Dias was a participant in the 2013 conclave , in which the first South American Pope, Francis , was elected.

After 2011 he was no longer listed as a member of these bodies. In 2014, his last remaining membership in the Latin America Commission was not renewed either.
