Francesco Cardinal Monterisi (born May 28, 1934 in Barletta , Province of Barletta-Andria-Trani , Italy ) is a cardinal emeritus of the Roman Catholic Church and archpriest emeritus of the Patriarchal Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls .

Life

After studying Catholic theology and philosophy in Rome, Monterisi received the sacrament of ordination on May 16, 1957 . He joined the Vatican's diplomatic service in July 1964 and became secretary of the Apostolic Nunciature in Egypt in 1966 . Pope John Paul II awarded him the title of Honorary Prelate of His Holiness on June 22, 1979 .

On December 24, 1982, John Paul II appointed him titular archbishop of Alba Maritima and pro-nuncio in Korea. The episcopal ordination received his John Paul II. On January 6, 1983 St. Peter's Basilica , co-consecrators were the Curia bishops Eduardo Martínez Somalo and Duraisamy Simon Lourdusamy . He resigned his office as nuncio on June 20, 1987 and from then worked as an official in the Vatican State Secretariat and as a professor at the Pontifical Diplomatic Academy . In 1993 Monterisi was appointed Apostolic Nuncio in Bosnia-Herzegovina and finally on May 7, 1998 he was appointed Secretary of the Congregation for Bishops .

On July 3, 2009, Pope Benedict XVI appointed him . to the archpriest of the Patriarchal Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls .

In the solemn consistory of November 20, 2010 Benedict XVI took him. as cardinal deacon with the title deaconry San Paolo alla Regola in the cardinals college . On November 23, 2012, Benedict XVI. the resignation from the office of Archpriest of the Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls, put forward by Francesco Monterisi for reasons of age. Cardinal Monterisi attended the 2013 conclave elected by Pope Francis .

He is Honorary Conventual Chaplain to the Sovereign Order of Malta .
