Manuel Cardinal Monteiro de Castro (born March 29, 1938 in Santa Eufémia de Prazins , Guimarães , Portugal ) was a Vatican diplomat and is Cardinal emeritus of the Roman Catholic Church .

Life

After studying Catholic theology and philosophy , Manuel Monteiro de Castro received the sacrament of ordination on July 9, 1961 from the Archbishop of Braga , António Bento Martins Júnior . Monteiro de Castro was incardinated in the Archdiocese of Braga . He received his doctorate in canon law .

In 1967 Manuel Monteiro de Castro entered the diplomatic service of the Holy See . He worked in the Apostolic Nunciatures in Panama , Guatemala , Vietnam , Australia , Mexico and Belgium as well as in the Vatican State Secretariat .

On 16 February 1985 Pope appointed him John Paul II. To Titular Archbishop of Beneventum and ordered him to the Pro-Nuncio to the Bahamas to Barbados , Dominica , Grenada , Jamaica , St. Lucia , Trinidad and Tobago and Belize . He received his episcopal ordination on March 23, 1985, Cardinal Secretary of State Agostino Casaroli ; Co-consecrators were the Archbishop of Braga, Eurico Dias Nogueira , and the Bishop of Porto , Archbishop ad personam Júlio Tavares Rebimbas . On April 25, 1987, Manuel Monteiro de Castro was also Pro-Nuncio in Antigua and Barbuda . Pope John Paul II appointed him on August 21, 1990 as Apostolic Nuncio in El Salvador and Honduras . On April 12, 1991, Monteiro de Castro resigned as Apostolic Nuncio in Honduras. Manuel Monteiro de Castro became Apostolic Nuncio in Namibia , South Africa and Swaziland on February 2, 1998 . On March 7, 1998 he was also apostolic nuncio in Lesotho . On March 1, 2000, Pope John Paul II appointed him Apostolic Nuncio in Andorra and Spain . On December 7th, 2007 Pope Benedict XVI appointed him . also permanent observer at the World Tourism Organization in Madrid .

On July 3, 2009, Pope Benedict XVI appointed him. as secretary of the Congregation for Bishops . Benedict XVI. appointed him on October 21, 2009 as secretary of the College of Cardinals . On January 5, 2012, Benedict XVI appointed him. to the major penitentiary and accepted him in the consistory of February 18, 2012 as a cardinal deacon with the titled deaconry of San Domenico di Guzmán in the college of cardinals. After the resignation of Benedict XVI. Cardinal Monteiro de Castro took part in the 2013 conclave , at which Pope Francis was elected.

On September 21, 2013, Pope Francis accepted Manuel Monteiro de Castro's request to resign from the post of cardinal major penitentiary for reasons of age.
