Manuel Cardinal Monteiro de Castro (born March 29, 1938 in Santa Eufémia de Prazins , Guimarães , Portugal ) was a Vatican diplomat and is Cardinal emeritus of the Roman Catholic Church .

Life

After studying Catholic theology and philosophy , Manuel Monteiro de Castro received the sacrament of ordination on July 9, 1961 from the Archbishop of Braga , António Bento Martins Júnior . Monteiro de Castro was incardinated in the Archdiocese of Braga . He received his doctorate in canon law .

In 1967 Manuel Monteiro de Castro entered the diplomatic service of the Holy See . He worked in the Apostolic Nunciatures in Panama , Guatemala , Vietnam , Australia , Mexico and Belgium as well as in the Vatican State Secretariat .

On 16 February 1985 Pope appointed him John Paul II. On January 5, 2012, Benedict XVI appointed him. to the major penitentiary and accepted him in the consistory of February 18, 2012 as a cardinal deacon with the titled deaconry of San Domenico di Guzmán in the college of cardinals. After the resignation of Benedict XVI. Cardinal Monteiro de Castro took part in the 2013 conclave , at which Pope Francis was elected.

On September 21, 2013, Pope Francis accepted Manuel Monteiro de Castro's request to resign from the post of cardinal major penitentiary for reasons of age.
