Júlio Tavares Rebimbas

Júlio Tavares Rebimbas (born January 21, 1922 in Bunheiro , Murtosa , Portugal ; † December 6, 2010 in Boavista (Porto) , Portugal) was a Roman Catholic clergyman and bishop of Porto , who held the personal title of archbishop .

Life

Júlio Tavares Rebimbas, son of a small farmer and a seamstress, attended the Colégio de Ermesinde and then the seminaries of Vilar in Porto, Olivais in Lisbon and Santa Joana in Aveiro . He was ordained a priest on June 29, 1945 by João Evangelista de Lima Vidal , Bishop of the Diocese of Aveiro . From 1945 he was vicar in the parish Ílhavo , from 1946 to 1949 pastor of Avelãs de Cima and Avelãs de Caminho in Anadia . He then returned to Ílhavo and was a pastor there from 1949 to 1965. In this role he campaigned for the establishment of several social institutions such as the training and assistance center, the poor foundation and the senior center. In 1952 he became professor of religion and morals at the diocesan seminary in Aveiro . In 1958 he became judicial vicar and in 1959 he was appointed vicar general . Pope John XXIII appointed him monsignor in 1959 . In 1961 Tavares Rebimbas was appointed director of the Colégio Liceal João de Barros in Ílhavo.

After his appointment on September 27, 1965 as Bishop of Faro by Pope Paul VI. he took part as a council father in the fourth session of the Second Vatican Council . The episcopal consecration on December 26, 1965 donated him the Bishop of Aveiro, Manuel d'Almeida Trindade , in the stadium of Ílhavo; Co- consecrators were Francisco Maria da Silva , Archbishop of Braga, and Francisco Rendeiro OP, Coadjutor Bishop in Coimbra. He officially assumed the office of Bishop of Faro at the end of January 1966 and was thus responsible for the Algarve region.

In 1972 Pope Paul VI appointed him. the Titular Archbishop of Mitylene and ordered him to auxiliary bishop in the archdiocese of Lisbon and the coadjutor of the Patriarch of Lisbon . In the same year he was elected President of the Episcopal Commission for Christian Education. On November 3, 1977, he was appointed the first bishop of the newly founded diocese of Viana do Castelo with the personal title of archbishop. In 1981 he was elected President of the Episcopal Commission for Liturgy.

On February 12, 1982 he was finally appointed Bishop of Porto by Pope John Paul II . Until the appointment of his successor Armindo Lopes Coelho on October 15, 1982, he also remained Apostolic Administrator of the Diocese of Viana do Castelo. On May 15, 1982 he was allowed to receive Pope John Paul II on his trip abroad in Porto. He also became a member of the Permanent Council of the Portuguese Bishops' Conference in 1982 and of the Congregation for Bishops in 1986 .

During his tenure as Bishop of Porto, which lasted until 1997, he campaigned for the restoration of numerous ecclesiastical buildings in his diocese, such as the Seminário da Sé , the Casa Episcopal , the Torre da Marca , the Cúria Diocesana and the Tribunal Eclesiástico .

Shortly before his resignation as bishop, he was awarded the Medal of Honor of the City Council of Porto on May 31, 1997. His successor as bishop was again Armindo Lopes Coelho.

He died on December 6th, 2010 and was buried on December 7th in Porto Cathedral.
