history

The place name is of Germanic origin. A first community in Ermezende was probably founded by the Suebi or in the subsequent Visigoth Empire . Another explanation sees the daughter of landlord Gundezindo, named Ermezinde, mentioned in 890, as the namesake of the local area, which her father gave her.

The first documented mentions of a local village Azomes come from the royal surveys of 1258. As Azenas it is mentioned in the town charter of Maia in 1519 , and is in the registers as Açomes in 1706. The industrial development of the region began with the arrival of the railroad in 1875. The municipality was called São Lourenço de Asmes until the proclamation of the Portuguese Republic (1910), when in 1911, at the request of the municipal administration, its name was changed to the current place name.

The place was raised to a small town ( Vila ) in 1938 and a city ( Cidade ) in 1990 .
