The Linha do Minho , in German main line of the Minho , is a Portuguese railway line between the two cities of Porto and Valença .

Route

The railway line has a transition to Galicia ( Spain ) and is therefore an important link between the two Iberian countries for passenger and freight traffic. With the "Celta" there is an international connection from Porto to Vigo with two pairs of trains and a travel time of approx. 2 hours and 15 minutes. The route is operated by Comboios de Portugal (CP).

history

The Linha do Minho opened in 1875. In the past there was a section of the Linha do Minho between Valença and Monção , but this section was discontinued in the 1980s and is now used as a cycle path.

In the course of the expansion of the Ramal de Braga, which branches off from the Linha do Minho at Nine station, the Porto – Nine section was expanded and electrified in the 1990s. The rest of the Nine – Valença section remained unelectrified and mostly single-track. Although promised several times by various governments, work on electrifying the rest of the route did not begin until 2018. On July 15, 2019, the electrified section Nine – Viana do Castelo was inaugurated. The construction work, under the supervision of the infrastructure manager Infraestruturas de Portugal , cost 16.5 million euros.

The VIana do Castelo – Valença section is to be electrified by 2020.
