history

Vigo was founded by the Romans ( Vicus ). The later medieval settlement was at the foot of the O Castro mountain and included what is now the old town of Berbés .

At the end of the 10th century, the Moorish ruler Almansor attacked the city, and it was not until 1170 that Fernando II (reigned 1157–1188) was able to repopulate Vigo. Constant raids by the Normans and the plague in the 14th century, in which almost the entire population died, hit the Viguesen hard. After Charles V granted the city privileges in 1529, Vigo flourished primarily through trade in South America. Sir Francis Drake had the unfortified city thoroughly destroyed in 1589 in the course of the Counter Armada . In 1619 Turkish pirates plundered the Ría de Vigo , after which Vigo got its city walls. In 1702 the naval battle near Vigo ended in the War of the Spanish Succession between a Spanish-French gold armada and Anglo-Dutch squadrons with a raid by the victorious English through Vigo. Napoleon's troops marched into the city in 1808, and after three months of French occupation they were driven out by the Viguesen. By 1840 only 5500 people lived in Vigo. Faro de Vigo, the oldest newspaper in Spain, appeared as early as 1853.

During the Second World War , Vigo was one of the bases of the German submarine weapons in Spain. Spain had declared itself neutral, but not least because of the German support in the Spanish Civil War, the Franco dictatorship had a positive attitude towards the German Reich for a long time and tolerated the violation of neutrality from 1940 to 1942. The supply bases were usually merchant ships. In the book and in the film "Das Boot" This fact was recorded.

After the Transición , Vigo became, alongside Madrid, one of the centers of the Movida , the cultural awakening after the end of the Franco dictatorship .

In 1980 the animal welfare organization Sea Shepherd sank the whaling ships Isba I and Isba II in the port of Vigo .
