The Puente de Rande (Spanish) or Ponte de Rande (Galician) is a cable-stayed bridge that connects the towns of Redondela and Moaña near Vigo in the Spanish region of Galicia and thus crosses the Ría de Vigo , the naval battle of Vigo in 1702 took place.

The structure was planned by engineers Fabrizio de Miranda , Florencio del Pozo (who was also responsible for the foundation ) and Alfredo Passaro . Construction of the bridge began in 1978. It forms part of the toll road Autopista del Atlántico ( AP-9 ), which is part of European route 1 . Until May 23, 2006, a fee was also charged for driving on the bridge, but then the toll between Vigo and O Morrazo was lifted.

View of the cable-stayed bridge from the roadway perspective (2016)

The structure has a length of 1558 m, the height is 152.0 m and the main span extends over 401 m. At the time it opened, it was not the cable-stayed bridge with the longest main span in the world, but at that time it had the longest main span that carried more than two lanes.

It is used by around 50,000 vehicles every day. Since it was opened to traffic, more than 230 million vehicles have crossed the bay at this point. The construction costs amounted to 3,658 million pesetas . These were earned several times through the toll.

The widening of the bridge planned for the years 2008–2010 was not carried out due to financing problems; however, it was viewed as urgent again in 2013.

In the years from 2015 to 2017, the bridge piers (pylons) were renovated and reinforced for the additional load bearing capacity for the bridge extension by two lanes. The expansion of the bridge is intended to achieve a peak frequency of 95,000 vehicles per day (possibly conversion of an hourly peak value to a daily value). The extension by one lane each to the right and left of the pylons was completed in 2017 and opened to traffic in 2018. Like the previous bridge, the construction of the bridge extension was designed as a cable-stayed bridge, with the bridge superstructure being made of steel. The additional stay cable construction that became necessary was arranged parallel to the old stay cable guide down to the new additional superstructure for optical reasons. Since the old bridge piers were integrated into the static construction of the new stay cable guide with reinforcement of the piers, there was also an overlay-like increase in the pillar construction and thus an increase in the entire building complex. The expansion of the number of lanes required serious structural changes to the traffic routing and connection in the abutment area, which, due to the outer lanes, led to a new overall length of the bridge structure of 1,604 m. In the course of the expansion, 13,200 tons of steel were used.
