The Citroën Berlingo is a high-roof station wagon from the French car manufacturer Citroën . It is identical to the Peugeot Partner and came onto the market at the end of 1996. The name Berlingo is derived from the French word Berlingot , a shortened version of the Berline carriage shape . In 1997, the new model won the Van of the Year title together with the Peugeot partner .
There are different versions with one, two or without sliding doors, with tailgate or rear wing doors and variants as panel vans with sheet metal side windows. A special feature is the multifunctional roof of the Spacelight / Modutop equipment variant . In addition, a folding roof was available ex works until March 2007. Conversions as a mobile home are also offered, partly supported by the factory. An electric car version was also offered as the Citroën Berlingo Electrique .
With the Berlingo, Citroën was the first to offer a new class of high-roof station wagons , the floor space of which corresponds roughly to that of a VW Golf , but which offers the driver a higher seating position and a higher body over the entire length of the interior. In January 2004, the Berlingo was the 48th best-selling vehicle in Germany with 1,074 new registrations.
The models for the German market are produced in Vigo , Spain , and transported to Bremerhaven by ship . It is also produced in the Mangualde plant (Portugal).
The construction of panel vans has a long tradition at Citroën. From spring 1951 to summer 1978, 1,246,306 units of the box duck (Fourgonnette AK400) based on the Citroën 2CV were built. This was replaced in the summer of 1978 by the Acadiane , a panel van version of the Dyane , which was built until the end of 1987.
In autumn 1984 the next C15 panel van based on the Visa came onto the market. Sales of the C15 ceased in Germany when the Berlingo was introduced; In the Vigo plant (Spain), production of the C15 ended on December 2, 2005 after around 1,800,000 copies.

The first generation of the Berlingo was launched in late 1996. It is based on the floor pan of the Citroën ZX or the Peugeot 306 .
Version history of the Berlingo I
- September 1996: Presentation of the Berlingo in Germany at the 56th IAA Commercial Vehicles in Hanover
- November 1996: The Berlingo is new to the market, the first model in the new vehicle class of high-roof station wagons, a type of panel van without any visual separation between the driver's cab and the load compartment. At the beginning two engines were available: a 1.4-liter engine with 55 kW (75 PS) and a 1.1-liter engine with 44 kW (60 PS) (only in the panel van version).
- January 1997: Introduction of the 1.9-liter diesel engine with 51 kW (70 PS)
- March 1997 introduction of the model Multispace with optional electric folding sunroof
- October 1998: Special model Charleston with ABS , electric folding sunroof, only with 1.8 l petrol engine (1.8 i)
- April 1999: Introduction of the sliding door on the right side
- September 1999: Special model Ocean based on the Multispace with air conditioning as standard, metallic paint, central locking with radio remote control, right mirror electrically adjustable, both mirrors heated, front electric windows, split rear bench, painted mirror housings, Isofix mountings on the right and middle rear seats, painted bumper aprons , disengageable airbag and third three-point belt on the back seat as standard.
- November 1999: Introduction of the 2.0-l diesel engine with common rail injection and turbocharging (2.0 HDi) (as in the Citroën Xantia and Citroën Xsara Picasso )
- February 2000: Chrono special model , replaces the Ocean special model , almost exactly the same equipment (new: retractable rear headrests), metallic paint no longer as standard
- May 2000: Introduction of the sliding door on the left, the multiplex system (a bus system based on the CAN bus). Current production number: 440,000 copies, produced in Spain, Portugal, Morocco, Poland and Argentina
- December 2000: Introduction of the Modutop multifunctional roof in the special Spacelight model ; the 1.6-l petrol engine with two overhead camshafts (1.6i 16V) replaces the 1.8-l engine (1.8i)
- October 2002: Citroën presents the renewed Berlingo at the Paris Motor Show 2002: use of a new front axle as in the Xsara Picasso; new, rounded design of the front section with clear-glass headlights and wide bumpers; also: redesigned cockpit
- December 2002: TONIC special model replaces the Chrono special model , based on the Berlingo
- September 2003: One million Berlingos built, more than half of them as a car version
- June 2004: Citroën limits the vehicle range to the model versions Kombi X (later called Advance ), Multispace and Multispace Plus , models such as Spacelight and Tonic are omitted; new special model XTR with a higher body and a differential lock with limited slip (not offered in Germany)
- July 2005: The 2.0 HDi 90 engine variant is replaced by the 1.6-liter diesel engine (1.6 HDi 90) (without diesel particulate filter FAP)
- October 2005: The Berlingo is slightly redesigned : sliding doors with new mechanics that make operation much easier, modified interior fittings, new side and rear indicators and side protection strips. The safety package now includes a speed limiter , and the Exclusive model has an on-board computer, rain and light sensor, special light alloy wheels, ESP as standard (with rear disc brakes), roof rails, reversing sensors and tinted rear windows. The model range in Germany now includes the variants Advance , Style , Multispace Plus , Multispace Exclusive . The 1.9 l diesel engine with swirl chamber injection (1.9 D 70) will be replaced by the 1.6 l diesel engine with common rail injection and turbocharger (1.6 HDi 75, without FAP).
- June 2008: With the official start of sales of the second Berlingo generation in Germany, the model range of the first generation is considerably restricted. The Berlingo I is now available under the name Berlingo First and its basic equipment roughly corresponds to the Berlingo Advance previously offered . The current model can be upgraded with a comfort package. Only the 1.4-l petrol engine with 54 kW and the 1.6-l diesel engine with 55 kW without diesel soot particle filter (FAP) are offered as engines. A tailgate is no longer available.
- End of 2009: The last Berlingo First for the German market are produced. The first Berlingo generation has not been part of the model range here since the beginning of 2010. In Argentina, however, it is still offered today (as of February 2018).
Berlingo Electrique
The electric tradition was continued in 1997 with the Citroën Berlingo Electrique, which was built in 1749.
The Citroen Berlingo Electrique (in Germany: Electric ) was a 15,5- kW - DC motor with separate excitation and recuperation offered, which accelerates the car to a maximum of 95 km / h. Nickel-cadmium batteries from Saft SA with a voltage of 162 V and a capacity of 100 Ah were used as the traction battery for the electric car , providing a range of around 95 km. The energy consumption is 20 to 25 kWh / 100 km from the socket.
A new model of a Berlingo with electric drive was realized by the cooperation PSA with Venturi in 2009 after winning a tender from the French Post . 1000 Citroën Berlingo / Peugeot Partner First Electrique vehicles were produced for this order . Venturi installs an asynchronous motor with 42 kW (57 PS) and 180 Newton meters in the Citroën Berlingo First electric , as well as the ZEBRA accumulator . An only slightly modified model drove from Shanghai to Paris in 2010.

The second generation of the Berlingo was presented at the Geneva Motor Show 2008, which differs from the first generation in many ways. The term Berlingo has remained, but has now been used in a different font. From June 2008 the Berlingo II was offered on the German market. The vehicle is 20 centimeters longer than its predecessor and shared the floor pan with the Citroën C4 Picasso , which in turn is based on the platform of the Citroën C4 . The Berlingo II has the same chassis as the C4 Picasso, but a larger wheelbase.
In the rear there are three removable individual seats in some equipment versions (standard on the XTR, Exclusive and e.g. on the special Mullewapp model). In addition, the Berlingo II had for the first time a height-adjustable driver's seat, a folding front passenger seat back and a longitudinally adjustable steering column. The gearshift lever has been relocated to the dashboard, the parking brake lever right next to the driver's seat. There was thus space between the front seats for a storage box with a roll-up lid (standard on the XTR and Exclusive car versions, can be retrofitted on other versions). Further equipment features, some of which were optionally available, included a separately hinged rear window, automatically folding exterior mirrors, an interior roof rack and an expanded range of storage compartments and shelves.
The safety equipment has been improved, the German car versions have disc brakes on the front and rear axles, ABS, ESP as well as front and side airbags (head airbags from Tendance equipment) as standard.
The engine range consists exclusively of 1.6-liter engines: two gasoline engines with 72 kW (98 hp) and 88 kW (120 hp) and two diesel engines with 73 kW (99 hp) and 88 kW (120 hp). Depending on the engine, model and equipment, the curb weight is between 1395 kg and 1658 kg, the braked trailer load is between 1200 kg and 1300 kg.
In addition, a commercial vehicle version was offered. With this, the loading volume increased from 2.8 m³ to 3.3 m³ with a payload of 565 kg to 775 kg. There was also the option of transporting three people next to each other in the first row and ordering the front passenger seat in an easy-to-fold version. With the Extenso cab, the storage space increased to 3.7 m³. A third seat was also available for the driver's cab. In addition to a height and width adjustable steering wheel, hill start assist and ESP were also standard.
Apart from the motorization with combustion engines, there was also a variant with a special motorization: the "Citroën Berlingo First Électrique": While the Venturi company was still equipping PSA models with electric drives in 2007, the battery-electric drive variant was no later than the market launch through PSA in 2013 the manufacturer himself took the initiative to manufacture the electric drive variant. At that time the variant was only called "Citroën Berlingo Électrique". The development of the electric drive variant, which appeared on the market in 2013, must have started PSA as early as 2011 or before, in cooperation with Mitsubishi. The new drive received 49 kW engine power; and a lithium-ion battery with a charging capacity of 22.5 kWh (for a range of 170 km according to NEDC) was used. With the 2015 facelift, the drive data remained unchanged. The facelift model with electric drive then bears the changed name "Citroën E-Berlingo Multispace".
Facelift
2012
As part of a facelift in April 2012, the Berlingo received a changed logo and slightly redesigned headlights and rear lights. LED daytime running lights were now also available as an option. Some versions also have static cornering lights .
With the Grand Berlingo, Oferol is building a long version extended by 428 mm for the Uruguayan market.
2015
At the Geneva Motor Show in March 2015, the Citroën Berlingo received a facelift that went hand in hand with improvements in equipment.
These included u. a. a 7-inch touch drive interface that manages navigation and media functions, an active braking system for city traffic, front parking sensors and a camera system to support reversing. A Euro 6 standard-compatible diesel drive (with two levels of selectable maximum motor power) or an electric drive with a range of 170 km per battery system full charge were available as drives .
