The PSA EW (Otto, E = Essence) and DW (Diesel) are a series of combustion engines that are mainly used in Peugeot and Citroën automobiles.

The DW engine was introduced in 1998 in the Citroën Xantia and Peugeot 406 as the successor to the XUD . In 1999 the EW followed as the successor to the XU. It is a DOHC (DW also SOHC ) - in- line engine with four (DW also two) valves per cylinder . The displacement was between 1749 and 2230 cm³.

EW (petrol engines)

EW7

The EW7 has a displacement of 1.7 l (1749 cm³) with a bore of 82.7 mm and a stroke of 81.4 mm. It is the successor to the XU7 and the non-supercharged XU10 with eight valves. All EW7s have two overhead camshafts and four valves per cylinder.

Production of the EW7 was discontinued in Europe on January 1, 2011 because it was not suitable for Euro 5 .

EW10

The EW10 has a displacement of 2.0 l (1997 cm³) with a bore of 85 mm and a stroke of 88 mm. It is the successor to the non-charged XU10 with 16 valves. All EW10s have two overhead camshafts and four valves per cylinder.

A version with direct injection called HPi was introduced in 2001 in the Citroën C5 and in the Peugeot 406 , but was discontinued in 2003 due to lack of demand.

Production of the EW10 was discontinued in Europe on January 1, 2010 due to its lack of Euro 5 suitability.

EW12

The EW12 has a displacement of 2.2 l (2230 cm³) with a bore of 86 mm and a stroke of 96 mm. It has two overhead camshafts and four valves per cylinder. It replaced the charged XU10 .

Production of the EW12 was discontinued in Europe on January 1, 2011 due to its lack of Euro 5 suitability.

DW (diesel engines)

DW8

The DW8 is a swirl chamber diesel engine with a displacement of 1.9 l (1868 cm³) with a bore of 82.2 mm and a stroke of 88 mm. It replaced the non-charged versions of the XUD7 and XUD9 .

Production of the DW8 was discontinued in 2007 due to its lack of Euro 4 suitability. The DW8 was replaced by the 1.4-liter HDi-DV engine with 50 kW (68 hp).

DW10

The DW10 was PSA's first direct-injection diesel engine . It has a displacement of 2.0 l (1997 cm³) with a bore of 85 mm and a stroke of 88 mm and replaced the supercharged versions of the XUD7 and XUD9 .
