From the end of 2004 the XC90 was also available with a V8 petrol engine. The B8444S engine, developed in collaboration with Yamaha , is the first eight-cylinder unit ever offered by Volvo in a passenger car. The engine has an output of 232 kW from a displacement of 4.4 liters. The five-cylinder engines available from the start are installed transversely. The more powerful engines have Haldex all-wheel drive, which distributes between 5 and 65 percent of the torque to the rear wheels, depending on the driving situation. The rear axle is a multi-link construction .

The XC90 was available from July 2005 with the equipment packages - (in order of value) Kinetic (basic version), Momentum , Summum , Executive (very luxurious) or R-Design (formerly Edition Sport ). The R-Design package includes a sportier chassis, exhaust system with four tailpipes, leather sport seats with more lateral support, a sport steering wheel, sporty aluminum inserts in the speedometer, center console and doors and 8.0 × 19 ”5-spoke light alloy wheels in the XC -Design included. The Momentum version was upgraded in November 2009 and has been called Edition since then .

Facelift

At the end of May 2006, Volvo presented the revised version of the XC90. After almost four years without changes, the front and rear have now been revised. The rear section remained unchanged, apart from minor cosmetics primarily on the rear lights. The wider underrun protection is also noticeable. The side indicators are now in the side mirrors instead of on the body as before. The all-wheel drive system has also been revised.

After Geely bought Volvo, the V8 engine was dropped from the program at the end of 2010. According to Volvo, the reason is the general trend towards saving. Shortly beforehand, the 3.2 liter's output was increased from 175 to 179 kW.

In July 2014, production of the XC90 was stopped. A total of 636,143 units were built. At the new Volvo plant in Daqing, China, the vehicle will continue to be produced under the name Volvo XC Classic and will be sold exclusively in China.

At the end of January 2015, production of the second XC90 started, which takes place in the Torslanda plant near Gothenburg. Since the summer of 2014, details have been announced step by step “from the inside to the outside”: According to the manufacturer, there were some world firsts, especially in the security area. On August 27, 2014, during the press launch in Stockholm, Sweden, the first outdoor footage was released.

The XC90 could be ordered from September 3, 2014 as a special First Edition model for 90,200 euros. Based on Volvo's "year of birth", this was limited to 1,927 copies worldwide and was sold out after 47 hours. For Germany it was the D5 diesel engine with 165 kW, 8-speed automatic, Haldex all-wheel drive and almost complete equipment.

However, with 108 copies including dealer orders and raffle vehicles (e.g. from auto motor und sport ), less than six percent of the First Edition was sold to Germany.

This was followed by the presentation of an R-Design model. It is available for all engine variants.

The new Volvo XC90 is powered exclusively by the two-liter four-cylinder Drive-E motors of the new VEA generation, which meet the Euro 6 standard. The top model in the series is the 298 kW (405 hp) T8, in which Volvo relies on twin-engine technology. A 233 kW (317 hp) T6 engine is supported by an electric motor with 65 kW; the standard consumption is 2.1 liters / 100 km of petrol. According to the manufacturer, the plug-in hybrid can travel up to 40 kilometers purely electrically. All engines are equipped with the 8-speed automatic.
