The Volvo P1800 is a passenger car model from the Swedish car manufacturer Volvo and, after the P1900, represents Volvo's second attempt to enter the sports car market.

description

The shape of the P1800 was designed in 1957 by Pelle Petterson , then an employee at Pietro Frua in Italy. The first model was assembled in Great Britain at Jensen Motors in West Bromwich from 1961 to 1963 . The bodies were delivered by rail from the Pressed Steel Company 's Linwood plant . This version was equipped with a 1.8-liter carburettor engine with 66 kW (90 hp) (4-cylinder in-line engine).

Due to quality problems with assembly and painting, Volvo ended the collaboration with Jensen in 1963; production was relocated to Sweden at Volvo's main plant in Lundby near Gothenburg . An S for Sweden has been added to the model designation 1800 . At the same time, the output was increased to 71 kW (96 PS). Pressed Steel continued to manufacture the bodies until 1969, when the press tools were transported to Sweden and Volvo manufactured the sheet metal parts itself at the Olofström plant .

In 1968 the 1800 S got a completely new engine with a displacement of two liters and 77 kW (105 hp). A year later it was replaced by the 1800 E, which for the first time had an injection system ( D-Jetronic ) and achieved an output of 91 kW (124 hp) with otherwise the same engine.

The Volvo 1800 became well known as Roger Moore's “company vehicle” in 118 episodes of the Simon Templar television series from 1962 to 1969.

In the period from autumn 1961 to spring 1972, 39,407 examples of the coupé were built with various engines. Some copies were made at DiVolvo in Chile.

P1800 ES

In August 1971 the Volvo P1800 ES was presented, a station wagon coupé based on the technical basis of the 1800 E.

Despite the high price, the vehicle, also known as the “Snow White's coffin”, was a sales success in the USA, while demand in Europe remained limited.

Since new safety regulations came into force in the USA for 1974, which stipulated, among other things, large bumpers at a certain height, Volvo decided to stop production of the 1800 ES in autumn 1973. The changes necessary to comply with the regulations would have been too extensive. After this decision was published, demand for the 1800 ES increased - especially in the USA - so that the entire remaining production was sold out within a few weeks.

Kilometers (/ miles) record

An 1800 S holds the kilometer record for cars with more than three million miles (4.8 million kilometers; as of September 18, 2013). The vehicle was newly registered in the USA in July 1966, has not yet had any exceptional repairs to the original engine, transmission and axles and was driven daily by its first owner Irv Gordon until his death in November 2018. At this point in time, the vehicle had 3,260,257 miles (approx. 5.2 million km) on the clock.
