Berthold Koch

Berthold Koch (born February 22, 1899 in Berlin ; † May 2, 1988 ) was a German chess player .

Koch played tournament and correspondence chess and was editor of the magazine Schach .

Tournament chess

In 1926, Koch received the title of German Master . In 1946 in Leipzig he became champion of the Soviet zone of occupation after a play-off against Ludwig Herrmann, the future husband of Edith Keller , who also took part in the first Eastern Zone Championship together with her brother Rudolf Keller . After the founding of the GDR , he won the GDR championship in Binz in 1952 . He won the Berlin championship a total of four times . Koch took part in the Chess Olympiads for the GDR in 1952 and 1956 . Since 1950 he has held the title of International Master . Koch won the GDR team championship in 1959 , 1960 , 1966 and 1967 .

Correspondence chess

Koch also played correspondence chess intensively. In 1959 he was named International Correspondence Chess Master by the International Correspondence Chess Federation . At the 2nd World Correspondence Chess Championship he was ranked 7 to 9 and at the Dr. Dyckhoff Memorial Tournament (1954–1956) ranked 3 to 4.

In 1947 the magazine Schach-Express was founded in East Berlin . This was renamed Chess in 1951 and still exists today (2020). Koch was the responsible editor until 1966. The permanent heading Chess teaches chess - High School of Combination was founded by him under the name We teach chess . Kurt Richter later expanded the category very successfully.
