List of Berlin masters in chess
In the 19th century there were no city championships in chess in Berlin . During this time, however, the importance of unofficial city championships was played by the tournaments of the Berlin Chess Society , the leading Berlin chess club , which were usually very busy . The first tournament of the chess society took place in 1853, which Jean Dufresne won after a playoff against Max Lange . In the summer of 1902, Ossip Bernstein won the first championship of the General Chess Federation in Berlin , the predecessor of the Berlin Chess Federation , ahead of Moritz Lewitt and Piotrowski.
Official city championships have only been held since 1904. Horatio Caro won the first such tournament ahead of Ossip Bernstein , Rudolf Spielmann and Wilhelm Cohn . As a result of the division of Berlin , there were separate city championships in East and West Berlin between 1953 and 1990 . Since reunification, all-Berlin championships have been held again.
