Success as a player

He achieved his first successes at the U14 championships in Novosibirsk. In 1979 he finished second, in 1980 and 1981 he won these championships. From 1981 to 1984 he took regular courses at the Chess School of Alexander Panchenko (1953-2009) from Chelyabinsk. The training group also included the later grandmasters Ruslan Shcherbakov and Maxim Sorokin († 2007) as well as Svetlana Prudnikova , who later reached the women's grandmaster title .

In 1989, Lagunov won the individual championship of the armed forces of the USSR in Novosibirsk in a round-robin tournament with 18 participants. With 11.5 points from 17 games, the untitled debutant and substitute player relegated many later grandmasters to their places: Alexander Baburin (11 from 17), Alexander Nenaschew , Sergei Kalinitschew , Felix Levin , Vladimir Chuchelov , Grigory Serper , Marat Makarow and ten other players . He exceeded the norm for the title " Master of Sports of the USSR " by one point.

In 1991 FIDE awarded him the title of International Master. He achieved the three partial norms for this in 1990 at the International Tournament of Schachfreunde Neukölln (1st – 3rd place with 7 out of 11 together with IM Rigo and Hausner and ahead of Michael Bezold , Robert Rabiega ) and in 1990 and 1991 at the “ Berliner Sommer ” open - with 6 or 6.5 points from 9 games.

From 1994 to 1996 Lagunow won the Berlin championship three times in a row and each qualified for the German individual championship. In 1994 and 1995 he reached 5.5 points from 9 games in Binz, in 1996 he finished fifth in Saarbrücken with 6 out of 9, tied with Karsten Müller , Klaus Bischoff and Robert Rabiega.

Success as a trainer

In 1988 Lagunow made his coaching debut. For Marat Makarov, who was unable to participate in the USSR team championship , he looked after his wife Julija Djomina in the first half of the tournament at the USSR women's championship in 1988 in Almaty (Kazakhstan). All three played in the same club, the Army Sports Club in the Siberian Military District .
Djomina started the first seven rounds with 6.5 points, after which Makarow took over the further care. Djomina became the USSR champion on her first participation, ahead of Nana Alexandria , Nino Gurieli , Svetlana Matwejewa and others.

In Berlin, from 1990 to 1991, Lagunow trained the very successful young players of the Neukölln chess friends: Lars Thiede , Stephan Berndt , Lars Hein, Rolf Behnk and Kurt Güldner. Güldner finished second in the German U20 Championship in Münster in 1990.
Lagunow's future wife Juliane Woitinski († 2011) also played in Münster and reached 3rd place in the German U20 Championship for women.

From 1991 to 1992 Lagunow coached the second division team of SVg Lasker-Steglitz , of which he was a member. After the death of Albrecht Colditz, an important functionary of the club, the training became more and more rare and stopped at some point.

Lagunow is currently looking after his two children Elina and Raphael .
