Alexander Baburin

Alexander Baburin ( Russian Александр Евгеньевич Бабурин ; born February 19, 1967 in Gorki ) is an Irish chess player of Russian origin.

Life

As a child he learned to play chess from his father. He was trained by grandmasters Oleg Chernikov and Alexander Panchenko, among others . Until 1993 Alexander Baburin lived in Nizhny Novgorod, which was known under the name Gorky until 1990. From 1984 he studied radiation physics at the University of Gorki for one year . In 1985 he was drafted into the army and after his military service he played as a professional chess player for the army sports club. He also studied engineering and linguistics , but did not complete any of his three degrees. He has lived in Dublin with his wife and two children since September 1993 , where he works as a chess teacher, professional and bookseller. His 1997 published book Winning Pawn Structures (translated Profitable Bauer nstrukturen ) got good reviews. Since 2000 he has been in charge of the daily, now weekly, newsletter Chess Today .

Single successes

In December 1990 he won the 4th Dubinin Memorial in Nizhny Novgorod, in 1992 the Liechtenstein Open in Schellenberg in front of Lutz Espig and Edhi Handoko, and the Swiss Open Championship in Leukerbad . In 1993, 1994, 2005 and 2016 he won the Kilkenny Chess Congress , in 1995 and 2010 he also won the Bunratty International Chess Festival and in 1997 the Universe Open in San Francisco . With 8 points from 9 games he won the Isle of Man Open , also in 1997, and achieved an Elo rating of 2827. At the 1999 Commonwealth Championships in Bikaner , India , he remained unbeaten with 8.5 out of 10, but does not play Competition as the Republic of Ireland is not a member of the Commonwealth of Nations . At the Politiken Cup in Copenhagen in 1999 he shared the win with Tiger Hillarp Persson . In May 2007 he was able to win the 25th edition of the Liechtenstein Open , this time in Triesen , for the second time (ahead of Eduardas Rozentalis and Iván Faragó ). Baburin won the master class of the Cork Chess Congress in 2007 and 2015. In his only (as of 2009) participation in an Irish individual championship , he won it in 2008 in Dublin.

Team chess

With the Irish national team he took part in seven Chess Olympiads ( 1996 , 2000 , 2002 , 2004 , 2006 , 2008 and 2014 ) with a total of 41 points from 77 games (+20 = 42 −15), as well as the 2005 European Team Championship.

In Hungary he played in 1991 for BEAC Budapest and in Austria in the 2002/03 season for SV Tschaturanga . In the German federal chess league he played in the 1997/98 season for Schachfreunde Neukölln , in the 1999/2000 season for the Delmenhorster Chess Club and in the 2003/04 season for the Bremer Schachgesellschaft von 1877 . With the London club Wood Green , where he has played since 1998, he won the 4NCL in 2002/03 , 2004/05 , 2005/06 , 2008/09 , 2009/10 and 2011/12 . He has also played in French leagues and was French team champion with CEMC Monaco in the 2001/02 season . With the Irish Kilkenny Chess Club he took part in the European Club Cups in 2006 and 2007.

Title and rating

He achieved the Soviet master's degree in 1987. In 1990 he received the title of International Master , in 1996 the title of Grand Master . He achieved the first standard for this at his first standards tournament in December 1991 in Budapest ( category 9), but the next standard took four years to come: it was not until 1995 that he achieved another GM standard, this time in Groningen . The final norm he achieved in 1996 at the 18th Politiken Cup in Copenhagen .

His Elo rating is 2487 (as of July 2016), making him the top Irish Elo ranking. His highest rating to date was 2600 in January 1998.
