The German Chess Federation (DSB) brought the Bundesliga into being and was initially solely responsible for tournament regulations and administration. A committee was later created, made up of three representatives each from the associations and the DSB. On February 3, 2007, the Schachbundesliga eV was founded in Berlin in order to be able to better market the Bundesliga. The DSB is a member of the association. Christian Zickelbein was the founding president, and Markus Schäfer has been his successor since June 2009 .

Since the 2008/09 season, the German Chess League has been responsible for playing and marketing the “strongest chess league in the world”.

The game days of the German Chess League take place exclusively on weekends, i. H. Saturdays and Sundays instead. Exceptions are eight competitions that are held on a Friday. The moves of a total of 960 games are to be broadcast live on the Internet on the homepage of the German Chess League each season. At the end of each season, one team is crowned German champion and four teams are affected by relegation to the four second leagues.

16 players plus up to two youth players may be entered per team. There is no restriction on foreigners. Since the 2014/15 season, every player has 100 minutes to think about the first 40 moves and 50 minutes until the end of the game. From the first move on, each player receives a time credit of 30 seconds per move until the end of the game.

Historical review

Bundesliga

According to the decision of the DSB Congress 1973 in Trier and on the initiative of the DSB sports director Helmut Nöttger , the Bundesliga chess league was founded in 1974, although at that time it had four tracks. At the end of the season, the four winners played a final tournament for the German team championship.

In 1980 the DSB created the single-track First Bundesliga; the top four from each group were qualified for this Bundesliga. The games will be held on a total of seven weekends. Four teams, consisting of eight players, meet on a weekend and contest two competitions (Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning).

The following teams started in the first season of the single-track league:

  • Qualification from group north:
SG Favorite Hammonia , Hamburger SK , Delmenhorster SK , SV Wilmersdorf
  • Qualification from group west:
Solinger SG 1868 , SG Bochum 31 , SG Porz , Sportfreunde Katernberg
  • Qualification from group southwest:
King Jumper Frankfurt , TSV Schott Mainz , SK Zähringen 1921 , SV 1920 Hofheim
  • Qualification from group south:
SF Marktheidenfeld , SC 1868 Bamberg , FC Bayern Munich , TB Erlangen

Women's Bundesliga

The women's Bundesliga started in 1991 . The best six teams from the upper league of the former GDR were set: Rotation Berlin , Spvgg 1899 Leipzig , Motor Weimar , SV Chemie Guben , PSV Dresden , VdS Buna Halle . Six teams from the West German state associations qualified for this: Krefeld chess club Turm 1851 (North Rhine-Westphalia), SVg Lasker-Steglitz (Lower Saxony, Bremen and Berlin), Hamburger SK (Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein), SC Bessenbach (Bavaria and Württemberg), TSV Schott Mainz (Baden and Rhineland-Palatinate), SV 1920 Hofheim (Hesse and Saarland). In the early days of the league, Elberfelder SG , which had been promoted in 1992, was a series winner with six championships before it withdrew from the game in 1999.

costs

Around 1990 the annual costs of the Bundesliga amounted to around one million DM , which had to be raised exclusively by the clubs involved. In 2011 Christian Zickelbein put the total budget of the 16 Bundesliga clubs at 1 million euros per season, with the two top clubs OSG Baden-Baden and Werder Bremen each accounting for around 200,000 euros.
