SG Porz achieved its first major success when it won the German team championship title in the finals of the German team championship in chess in 1967 . In the ranks of SG Porz was the later grandmaster Robert Huebner , with whom the club won the title a second time in the 1979 finals . Then the Porzer defeated the club Avangard Kiev (champions of the USSR from 1979) in the round of 16 of the European Cup . In the quarter-finals they failed to Burewestnik Moscow (winner of the European Cup).

Since the introduction of the first division in the 1980/81 season , the club has become German team champions eight times: 1981/82 , 1983/84 , 1993/94 , 1995/96 , 1997/98 , 1998/99 , 1999/2000 and 2003/04 . Only OSG Baden-Baden with ten and FC Bayern Munich with nine championship titles achieved a better result. The German Cup team championship won ten times: 1982/83, 1988/89, 1993/94, 1996/97, 1997/98, 1998/99, 1999/2000, 2003/04, 2010/11 and 2012/13 . The Porz team managed to become German Blitz team champions five times : 1997, 1998, 1999, 2001 and 2010. SG Porz also led the eternal table of the Bundesliga long before the Solingen chess society .

Withdrawal from the first division

Up until the 2006/07 season , the 1st team of SG Porz played in the first German chess league. For the 2007/08 season , the club withdrew its first team, as the patron Wilfried Hilgert with the new form of the tournament, which is independent of the German Chess Federation as “Bundesliga e. V. “did not agree. He disliked what he saw as the neglect of the amateur and especially the youth sector.

Since the 2008/2009 season, SG Porz has been champions of the 2nd Bundesliga West several times, but refused promotion to the Bundesliga. The highlight of the season since then has been the clash between SG Porz and the German champions OSG Baden-Baden in the German Cup team championship, which SG Porz was last able to win in the 2010/2011 and 2012/2013 seasons.

Youth work

SG Porz has continuously qualified in several age groups for the German club championships in recent years. The greatest successes are the German championship titles in the U20 age group in 1991, 2017 and 2018; U14w in 2002 and 2005 and U10 and U16 in 2012. With the two championship titles and a third place in the U14 age group, 2012 was also the most successful year for the Porzer youth chess team. At the end of 2014, the title in the U14 age group was won for the first time in Regensburg . In 2015, SG Porz won the title in the U12 age group that had never been won before, and the teams in the U16 and U20 age groups achieved further runner-up titles. 2017 was again a very successful year for the youth of SG Porz, which for the second time resulted in German championship titles in the age groups U14 and U20 (after 26 years of abstinence).
